Up
on the West Hill and peering down at the town below sits the ruins of
Hastings Castle. Built by William the Conqueror in 1067 after the Battle
of Hastings the castle is barely recognizable as the stronghold and monumental
building that it once was. But visitors can still explore the fabulous
remains for themselves while enjoying the wonderful view over the channel
that will have been enjoyed by castle-folk all those centuries ago.
With it's placement up above the town, and
with the fabulous lighting the ruins have been given it's an eerie feeling
to drive into Hastings along the A259 from Bexhill and see the castle
floating in the night sky.
Explore
the dungeons, walk down the aisle of the old chapel, marvel at the structure
that does still stand after a thousand years of history. To truly bring
Hastings Castle to life you must enter the Siege Tent and partake of "The
1066 Story". A spectacular audio/visual show that unrolls the history
of Britain's first Norman castle right before your eyes. When you emerge
from the tent after the show you see the ruins in a whole new light and
want to explore all over again with your new insights in mind!
If there is one thing you do during your
visit to Hastings it must be visit the castle and watch The 1066 Story!
