Hastings
Pier was opened on the first ever British Bank Holiday Monday 5th August
1872 by the Earl of Granville. Modeled on the Brighton West Pier it was
designed by Eugenius Birch. The pier was 275m (910ft) long and it's width
varied between 13.6m (45ft) and 57.5m (190ft). Unlike Brighton Pier it
had a oriental style pavilion on the end with a capacity of seating 2000
people.
Hastings pier has seen much action over
the years. Fire destroying the original pavilion and new being built.
Buildings added to house various leisure facilities including the slot
machines and arcades.
During
the 60s and 70s Hastings Pier played host to many classic rock bands including
The Rolling Stones and The Who. During the 80s it hosted an under-18s
disco which saw many of the celebrities of the day visit promotionally,
including Adam Woodyattt and Nick Berry from Eastenders. The pier's fortunes
were not to last and it closed to the public after failing to find a buyer.
Recently re-opened after much investment it houses many little arts and
crafts shops and is billed as "Covent Garden By The Sea" and
is well worth a visit!
